On 12 February 1944, the Abwehr was absorbed into the Reichssicherheitshauptambt or RSHA as a single German intelligence service under Himmler.
Canaris was relieved from his function as Chief of the Abwehr and placed under 'Hausarrest' at Lauenstein castle from 21 March until 30 June 1944 after which he was placed in charge of a small, new unit; "OKW-Sonderstab für Handelskrieg und Wirtschaftliche Kampsmasnahmen" in Berlin.
"Wilhelm Canaris as a 'prisoner of honour' at Lauenstein castle."
From the book "Canaris, Hitler's Spy Master" by Heinz Höhne, first published in Munich, 1976, as "Canaris, Patriot in Zwielicht".
This a rare photo of Canaris wearing the "War Merit Cross 1st Class with swords" be it on the wrong (right) side of the uniform.
